Our History

Shelter of Flint originally began operations in February of 1983, under the name of Emergency Night Shelter for Women. The shelter was a joint effort of fifteen agencies and organizations that understood the reality of women needing temporary emergency housing.

I n July of 1983, under the new name Emergency Shelter for Women & Children, we continued to add services and programs with a stronger emphasis on children; and later that same year, our services were expanded to twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. Today, our emergency shelter program serves single women, male and female single parents, and two parent households.

We have continued to grow as we’ve strived to meet the varied needs of homeless families in our community, expanding programs to include Transitional Housing. In 2003, we built the Rosewood Park apartment community – the first of our permanent supportive housing programs. These housing programs are designed to provide long term stability for individuals and families.
