Last Monday, Shelter of Flint hosted our annual salsa party! Each summer, the kids staying in our shelter take on the responsibility of caring for a garden, learning responsibility and patience in a fun way! This tradition has been going strong for 2 years now, and it’s always one of the highlights of summer. By the time fall rolls around, the garden is bursting with fresh tomatoes and peppers, ready for the big harvest. This year, a generous donor provided plants for the garden and replenished some tools and supplies. Plus, the kids were able to store all of their gardening supplies in a brand new shed with the generosity of the Rotary Club of Greater Flint Sunrise.

Look at all those fresh tomatoes!
When Monday came, the kids proudly picked their ripe tomatoes and peppers, washed and chopped everything up, and mixed it into a GIANT bowl of salsa. Finally, they got to enjoy the best part—tasting their hard work with chips in hand! It was such a fun afternoon, and a wonderful opportunity for the kids to see the fruits of their labor.

Everyone is pitching in
A big thank-you goes out to Amy from MSU 4-H, one of our frequent volunteers, who joined in to help with the festivities. Amy visits the shelter several times each month to support children’s programming like this, and we’re so grateful for her.
Want to get involved, too? Fill out our volunteer interest form here—we’d love to have you join us!
