ChildrenChildrens Programs
Nearly 60% of those who stay with us are children under the age of ten. These special shelter residents are often too young to understand why they are with us, but they are old enough to be scared, worried, and unsure about their future. Caterpillar Clubhouse seeks to provide these children with the tool they need to be successful, both educationally and socially.

During the school year, daily activities will place a strong emphasis on homework and tutoring. A sampling of ongoing programming topics includes:

  • Music – Monthly music workshop with Rock Star Academy
  • Building – Partnering with local Home Depot and Lowe’s stores to provide wood working and painting activities
  • Photography – Capturing images and displaying photographs around the shelter
  • Arts & Crafts – Painting, ceramics, jewelry, and shadow techniques
  • Fitness – Balance, dance, hula hoops, jump rope, backyard activities, and more
  • Cooking & Nutrition – Following recipes, kitchen safety, table etiquette, and nutrition and reading labels
  • Personal Care – Health and hygiene topics
  • Smart Money for Teens – Bank accounts, check writing, and balancing a checkbook

To meet the social and emotional needs of the children in our care, workshops will be interspersed with guided support groups. Activities in this group time may include:

  • Snack and Chat – An opportunity for children to participate in a guided discussion around topics such as their hopes and dreams.
  • Teen Time – It’s tricky to be a teenager at the shelter. This time would allow them the space to relax and have fun with board games, and just be teens!
  • Storytelling – Kids learn storytelling skills to create their own story, or re-tell a favorite bedtime book.
  • Family Fun Night – Weekly, family-friendly entertainment and activities to allow families to relax together.

During the summer, Shelter of Flint is proud to partner with Camp Copneconic to offer scholarships to children whose families have never before been able to afford to provide a camping experience. This offers children in our programs summer experiences that that are fun, help them learn new activity skills, make new friends, and help them immerse themselves in imaginative experiences.

Each year our summer youth programming culminates in a full-day Back to School Rally that allows children the opportunity to receive much-needed back to school supplies.
